Melanie Coleman, a collegiate gymnast at Southern Connecticut State University, died on Sunday, November 10th after a freak training accident. During practice on the previous Friday, Coleman slipped off the uneven bars and suffered a grievous spinal injury. She was then taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and died two days later. Her death comes as a big shock to everyone in the gymnastics community, and her family has received lots of support during this time.

After a San Diego State freshman’s death, 14 fraternities have been suspended for “possible misconduct.” The freshman, Dylan Hernandez, died after a frat party last week. Hernandez was unconscious and without a pulse when his roommate found him on the floor of their dorm room. It is believed that Hernandez fell off his bunk bed. San Diego State has not released which frat was hosting the party, but it is known that Hernandez was pledging to Phi Gamma Delta, which is now suspended. Students at SDSU have had concerns about the party culture for a long time, and Herndandez’s death may provoke discussion and reform.

Over two million pounds of chicken have been recalled in eight states because there is fear that the chicken may be contaminated with metal. These products are produced by Simmons Prepared Foods, Inc. and include whole chicken legs, boneless chicken, halal chicken legs and chicken tenderloins.

On the morning of Thursday, October 14, a teenage gunman opened fire at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California. The suspect, identified as 16-year-old Nathaniel Tennosuke Berhow, left three students wounded and two killed. After shooting the students, he shot himself in the head. Another school has been added to the list with Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Columbine.

As of Tuesday, November 12, it appears that the Supreme Court is going to allow the Trump administration to shut down DACA. Around 800,000 “dreamers” have been able to stay in America due to this federal program. While the U.S. Supreme Court went over the matter, hundreds of DACA supporters rallied outside, and police had to close the street in front of the Supreme Court. It appears that the five conservative justices believe that when the Department of Homeland Security ordered DACA be ended in 2017, they ordered appropriately. It is not final, but this is the direction it appears to be going in.

28-year old Kevin Tyrell Davis was stabbed and killed on November 4 at a Popeyes in Oxon Hill, just outside of Washington, D.C. The alleged murderer, 30-year old Ricoh McClain, is facing charges of murder and assault. Waiting in line for the very in-demand chicken sandwich, Davis and McClain got into an argument after Davis supposedly cut the long line. The two men continued the argument outside, and McClain stabbed Davis, who died shortly after being administered first aid.
